Joi scores BBC Award
Astralwerks and Real World Records are very proud to announce that on Saturday 20th November, Joi won the prestigious Music Award at this year's BBC Asia Awards. Also in the category were the Mercury Prize winner Talvin Singh, and Nitin Sawhney. Joi, who were formed by East London brothers Haroon & Farook Shamsher, are now established as one of the most important sounds to emerge from the once cult Asian underground.

Exclusive Joi Soundsystem Mix
As a tribute to Haroon Shamsher, Astralwerks presents this never released Joi Soundsystem mix. Recorded shortly before his passing, this mix is a fitting tribute to the innovation of Joi and the brilliance of a lost brother.

In memory Haroon Shamsher
It is with great shock and sadness that we must announce the news that Haroon Shamsher died July 8, 1999 of a heart attack. Although he had been ill for a week, his death was totally unexpected. Haroon and his younger brother Farook formed the radical and pioneering sound system and band Joi. Originally from Bengal and raised in London's East End, Haroon's musical career started in the innovative Joi Bangla Sound System which grew out of the Bangladesh youth movement. With Farook he progressed through DJ'ing to writing and recording their own music, developing one of the most exciting new musical styles of recent years. Earlier this year Joi signed a deal with Real World Records. Critical reaction for their debut album "One And One Is One" (distributed by Astralwerks in the US) has been outstanding and Joi were set to achieve a wider international audience, for which they had worked so hard. A ceremony took place on July 13 at Brick Lane Mosque and later at North Sheen Cemetary in London.

Asian Vibes
On March 29th, Real World Records are proud to release Joi's new single, "Asian Vibes." "Asian Vibes" is the first single to be taken from Joi's debut album One And One Is One. It follows "Fingers," which was mashed up by Justin Robertson. Joi are the original Asian Breakbeat fusionists, their blending of Asian influences with western culture and Hip Hop is well-known throughout the London club scene. This time the mixing duties are taken care of by the well-known skills of Way Out West and Skeewiff, resulting in two eclectic re-workings of the original. "Asian Vibes" will be available on vinyl (RWST9) and CD (RWSCD9). Have a listen to these new mixes over on the Joi sounds page. Joi's debut album is out now.

3.05.99 : Joi Sound System on Streetsound's freQ
It was a night of breakbeat fusion and funky grooves as Astralwerks took over Streetsound's freQ for a webcast from Joi and Astralwerks' very own DJ Ashley Warren. The night started with the Joi Sound System. The Joi Sound System has torn it up at London clubs like The End, Megatripolis, The Complex, Return To The Source, Whirl-Y-Gig and the Ministry of Sound. As if that weren't enough, Astralwerks' very own DJ Ashley Warren made his web debut working the decks with a downtempo set. Musical bliss courtesy of Astralwerks and our friends at Streetsound's freQ.
