 Haroon Shamsher 1965-1999
We were all greatly saddened by the news Haroon Shamsher had died of a heart attack on July 8, 1999. Although he had been ill for a week, his death was totally unexpected. Haroon and his younger brother Farook formed the radical and pioneering sound system and band Joi. Originally from Bengal and raised in London's East End, Haroon's musical career started in the innovative Joi Bangla Sound System which grew out of the Bangladesh youth movement. With Farook he progressed through DJ'ing to writing and recording their own music, developing one of the most exciting new musical styles of recent years. Earlier this year Joi signed a deal with Real World Records. Critical reaction for their debut album "One And One Is One" (distributed by Astralwerks in the US) has been outstanding and Joi were set to achieve a wider international audience, for which they had worked so hard. A ceremony took place on July 13 at Brick Lane Mosque and later at North Sheen Cemetary in London.

Shortly before Haroon's passing, he and Farook took to the studio for an electric Joi Soundsystem mix set. Never before released and exclusive to the Astralwerks Joi site, this mix is a fitting tribute to the innovation of Joi and the brilliance of a lost brother.
